Both males and females have a dark blotch on the lower part of their tail base (caudal peduncle). They have a narrow stripe on their sides and a spot on their tail but no spot on their side.
They have four openings near the jawbone (dentary lateralis) and two more below the eye area (post-lachrymal infraorbital lateralis).
Male fish have longer fin flaps at the front of their dorsal fin and longer rays at the top and bottom of their tail fin.
